Hormonal coils and copper coils look very similar, but they work in very different ways:

How do they work? The hormone levonorgestrel is released directly into the womb; cervical mucus becomes thicker; womb lining becomes thinner; mobility and viability of sperm is impaired. Copper ions impair mobility of sperm
How safe are they? For every 1000 women using it for a year, two will become pregnant. For every 1000 women using it for a year, 6-8 women will become pregnant.
How tolerable are they? Periods become lighter and less painful; may be some spotting at first; protection from infection. Longer and heavier periods; no protection from infections
How much do they cost? Depending on the coverage by the health insurance.
