Hormonal IUD as treatment

The Mirena® hormonal coil is an effective and approved treatment for gynaecological conditions such as very long or heavy periods (hypermenorrhoe). However, before fitting a Mirena it must be ruled out that the increased bleeding is not caused by a myoma or polyp in the uterine cavity.

For menopausal women who are taking a hormone replacement therapy, Mirena® can be a very helpful supplement to a pure oestrogen therapy. This avoids the need to take a second hormone (progesterone) and the regular periods that that causes.

Mirena® is an effective treatment for myoma located on the uterine wall, and for endometriosis, although there is not yet approval for this. Both conditions are very common.
